  1. Frida (Arafura Cadet catamaran) is for sale! The Arafura Cadet is a 11' catamaran designed as a training boat for teenagers. It was designed in the 1950's in Darwin by Neil Fowler (Mosquito, Arrow). I bought the boat about five years ago and took a couple of years to completely rebuild it. The only things left from the boat as I bought it are the hulls, centreboard, rudders, rudder boxes and trampoline. I stripped the hulls back to bare timber, repaired and repainted them. The trampoline is in excellent condition. The timber rudders and centreboard are in very good condition.
  2. Great looking boat Carl! $3,000 is a great deal for this brand new boat. The AC is an excellent boat for a teenager or small adult. One person, trapeze ... what’s not to love! ?
  3. Still for sale. Price reduced to $4,300. This is one of the best Cobras in Australia. Only sailed a handful of regattas since new. Near new trampoline, near new square top main, near new mast, near new sheets and blocks. Registered trailer that has been to QLD, NSW, SA from Victoria regularly. I may be able to assist with transport to the National Titles in Saratoga NSW in December 2017.

  6. Nice job. I have done a bit of work with dyneema (not shrouds) - it's fun to work with. I just use spliced loops most of the time but I have also used normal thimbles. I am interested in why you need those large thimbles - they are huge!
  7. Thanks for sharing the story. Did you ever find out what sort of boat it is? You might not need a telescopic tiller extension? Just use a longer piece of PVC tube and attach it using the existing hardware to the middle of the cross bar. It looks like you would be able to shorten the arms on the rudder stocks so they are not hanging over the beam. I assume the 'v' cut into the end of the arms is a basic cleat for the rudder downhaul. You may be able to get away with not using a traveller - many arrows don't use a traveller anymore. You might need a boom v
  8. I am continuing the story over on Facebook here: https://m.facebook.com/Arafura-Cadet-restoration-page-1209777179112632 Feel free to join me there! ?
  9. I thought it was time for an update. The beams are all cut, drilled and anodised. I have worked out just about all of the hardware I will use - mostly stuff I have already lying around. I am slowly making my way through the sand-fill-sand-undercoat-sand-fill-sand-undercoat-sand etc stage. It is taking a long time but has been enjoyable. I am confident that I will achieve a good undercoat finish. I am using two pack undercoat. A bit of an error there really (expensive and toxic) but at least I know it is 'high quality'. I am applying with a roller.
  10. Great video nickopen! i had a nice chuckle when you went over. Looks like you were having a blast. ? I would like to see some video of the kite up.
  11. What sort of boat is that riledup?
  12. Pirate is documenting two timber mosquito rebuilds over at catsailor.com. They are very informative. Find them here: http://www.catsailor.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=266555#Post266555 http://www.catsailor.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=259959#Post259959

  15. Really enjoyable regatta. Results: http://www.yachtingaustralia.com.au/site/yachting/results/msc/2015-16/CatChamp.html Photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/53023993@N08/sets/72157660915619304
  16. New square top main and jib arrived today. I think it may be the first AC square top in VIC?
  17. Can anyone suggest a good online/mail order supplier of stainless fasteners? I need beam bolts for the AC. I dont tend to have much time for traditional shopping so online works best for me.
  18. I have stripped back the port hull. I weighed it after I removed the beams and hardware and it weighed 16.2kg. After stripping off all the paint and glass from the hull it now weighs 14.4kg.
  19. Great weather today so got to have some time out in the sun stripping the hulls. I purchased a better heat gun and that made a difference. I tried paint stripper too which worked well but I preferred the heat gun. It's slow work ... but I am getting there. I have some pictures for those interested. http://www.dawson.id.au/ArafuraCadet/Photos/ac29.JPG http://www.dawson.id.au/ArafuraCadet/Photos/ac27.JPG http://www.dawson.id.au/ArafuraCadet/Photos/ac28.JPG I also have some video! http://youtu.be/NCFIKz6YvLA
  20. I had a go with the heat gun today. It didn't get much of the paint off, but it lifted a bunch of the glass. It seems to lift some of the glass and not others. The paint isn't really lifting the way it has when I have used the paint gun in the past. Photos below. http://www.dawson.id.au/ArafuraCadet/Photos/ac20.JPG http://www.dawson.id.au/ArafuraCadet/Photos/ac21.JPG http://www.dawson.id.au/ArafuraCadet/Photos/ac22.JPG http://www.dawson.id.au/ArafuraCadet/Photos/ac23.JPG http://www.dawson.id.au/ArafuraCadet/Photos/ac24.JPG http://www.dawson.id.au/ArafuraCadet/Photos/ac25.JPG
  21. Thanks Geoff My question about the vang relates to the new square top sail I imagine it will work quite differently to the original sail. I will give the head gun a go on the paint. It seems to only work on some paint types. It did nothing when I tried it on the old mozzy. Thanks for the tip.
