tom
Hi all! I have a question relating to different methods of upwind gust control. I have reasonable speed upwind in all conditions, by firstly loosening my base rig for conditions over 15kts, and also using a load of downhaul as the wind increases. The problem i have is that although my boat is fast in steady winds, it has a tendency when i am using my light wind rigging settings to heel instead of accelerate in the strong gusts. Pulling the mainsheet tight helps, but not enough to stay with the really fast boats. If i use my heavy weather rigging settings in the lighter conditions, i can't get the speed i need overall.(goes good in the gusts though) What other methods than mainsheet tension can i use to retain my tighter rig for light-medium conditions, but control the boat when the big gusts hit? Guest Old Mate
Mate, pull a bit more pre tension on downhaul, also that main has to be eased a bit and head a lil lower in the gusts You are losing your speed on the waves, from healing, you want that hull to be just above skimming level, be easy on the tiller, head down in the gusts easing sheet.
