Rudders / Centreboards

I am building my first PT and have recently purchased Larry Fay rudder and centerboards and Mal Willis stocks. Would anyone please have photo's or info on setting them up especially determining how wide to make the centerboard case. I am in Cairns Qld and unfortunately there are no other PT's this far up to check.

Anything would be greatly appreciated.

G'day Nick,

Welcome to the Paper Tiger fraternity!

If you send your e-mail address to me at dave at papertigercatamaran.org I can send you some pics of set ups.

Most people are heading towards rope pull down rudder systems these days, although many are still using the fibreglass push down rods. The rope system is better if you plan to lift the windward rudder while racing. The fibreglass rods are vulnerable if you have "jelly blubbers" or jellyfish in your waters.

The width of the centrecase (side to side) should be determined by the thickness of the centerboard. The length of the centrecase (fore-aft) is generally set to the plan maximum. If this is done in combination with putting the bottom slot as far back as allowed, your centreboards will angle backwards when down, which allows more mast rake to be carried, providing a better setup.

Let me know if you need any more info about PTs. Any chance of seeing you at the Nationals in Tasmania at the end of the year? If not, the one after that will be in NSW, a bit closer (although still a long way, I know).

Iam from Cairns, there are a few Paper Tiger Catamarans around, they just dont sail at the clubs racing, however Im sure if you come to theclub someone will know someone who owns one, I would Imagine even if you dont have the rope pull-down rudder setup i think you could set it up similar to a Nacra setup. Come up to the Mayday Regatta at Tinaroo.

It seems rudders people use, particularly around the lakes districts are abnormally long. I can only think this is to assist tacking with the intermittant breezes they experience. If you get a decent seabreeze like we do in Perth than the foil holmes brothers do are very good, it uses a push backwards and snap down system kinda like the hobies, with shockcord wrapped around to keep it locked down. I can post pics of mine if anyone wants.
