rudder pintles

I've organised some new foils for the 430 and I'm replacing the rudder pintles. I have one each Riley RM620XL [8mmx55mm] and RM620S [8mmx32mm]. They are good strong units but I don't think they make them any more. I'd like to use these if I can find some mates for them. Either that or some sort of equivalent.

Can anyone Help?

Hi Berny, can't help you with either of the pintles you mentioned. I have used plastic ronstan pintles in the past, and had them break, and now use the aluminium ronstan pintles which are holding up fine. (ronstan no. RF2515A) around $30 each. These have a 7.9mm diameter pin.

hi bernie,

are we talking pintles or gudgeons,

if the latter, as on your 430 pics, the Brisbane Cat Centre has excellent sets, and "keepers", ( I think these are what bent on your boat). They usually have a shackle or pin through the upper one to avoid losses like your unfortunate mishap.

The pin dia is 3/8".

Hope this can help ,

Thanks guys, Tom, I didn't see the ronstan no. RF2515A pintles in the Ronstan Catalogue, only the plastic things which are not strong enough. I check again.

Pete, the 430 has what I believe are pintles [with built in pins]. I'm useing typical square alum tube stocks my Mal Willis.

I'll check with BCC.

Had a look and the RF2515A looks like the plastic based ones I have? Are the bases aluminium? What is the pin lenght? There's no details in their web catalogue.

Pete, I can't see anything on the Nacra site about parts or spares or products except a lot of F18 hype and association info????

hi Berny

The gudgeon from BCC is aluminium with a 3/8 s/s pintle press fitted in.

If you give Ross a ring ,07 32714944,I am sure he will be able to tell you the length of the pin, also the hole centres of the gudgeon, I am sure they are very similar to yours on the 430, but the pin dia is 3/8, they have bushes available if required

They are available o/night if they are OK.

WWW.catsailor.net has them on their nacra parts page, but it doesn't have a pic of them.

They are a very strong unit.

hope this helps.

PS , on the catsailor web ,they are in HULL ASSEMBLIES, in the nacra parts

G'day Berny, the aluminium ronstan pintles are the same dimensions as the plastic base ones, and look the same except the back is hollowed out.

I replaced the plastic pintles with the aluminium ones 2 years ago. didn't have to drill more holes or alter anything on my rudderstocks.

hi Tom, Berny,

Pintles are pins, Gudgeons are the fittings that the pintle fits into,

which attach to the hulls, they are s/steel on many boats,ie.Maricat, or aluminium on others eg,Nacra.

Plastic pintles are used on older Hobie cats, they fit into s/steel gudgeons,(which attach to the hull.)

PS.

Ronstan produced plastic gudgeons, they then changed to aluminium ones.

hi Berny,

This is all a matter of semantics, we

all don't name things the same,,but we all know what we mean

I reckon Ron and Stan called them

Transom Pintles to differentiate between the parts when they changed.

The gudgeons 2500,2501,2503 usually fit on to rudder stocks, and then used a pintle to attach to the transom gudgeon.

It doesn't really matter, what is important is that you can get the ones you reqire.

I will still call pins Pintles, and gudgeons Gudgeons, but I am only a forgetful old chap, who finds it difficult to change.

PS.

Did you find the right ones?

No Pete, I'm still waiting for Riley to get back to me and I'll have to take a look at the alum., Ronstan things next time I'm at Whitworths. I don't get my foils for a couple of weeks yet so there's no real hurry.

Thanks for your help,

Berny.

G'day Berny,

Goodall Yacht Sails (now part of Australian High Performance Catamarans) sells aluminium versions of the plastic ones. I have purchased them previously and they seem good quality and reasonable price. They make a two hole mounting one and a four hole mounting one. You can get them with or without a hole for a retaining clip.

Phone them on (03) 5443 6910.

Regards,

Dave.
