Expected speeds?

I am looking at this thing and wondering if I am going to get the rush out of it I am expecting. I now have a one of the square topped mains from whirlwind sails. It is one of their super R models. The sail is quite a bit bigger than the original hobie 14 sail I had for it(it has hobie 14T standing rigging) I think it also surpasses the normal paper tiger sail area as well.

If the wind is say 15 knots and pretty flat. Can I expect to get the boat up on plane and or flying a hull?

Thanks guys, just getting antsy to get out sailing, a nice storm blew through earlier and the winds were fantastic, steady 15 knots and gusting upwards of 24. I am getting close to just chucking it and packing her up and going sailing, but I want the finish done right....

Is it a Turbo rig?

If so you will need assistance at 15knotts!

Sad about the round mast section but you will work that out and start looking for a better mast.

Teardrop with spreaders and rotation will add 10% lat least.

I am collection bits to do the same thing but I will use the old teardrop PT mast and cut down 470 spreaders so I can lose the lower stays to clear the jib and hooter.

The Buffalo fully battened jib would make a GREAT job for this boat also. Rake mast and buy a trap harness.

That round mast sperates airflow from front of sail and you loose power and up wind performance.

This boat REALLY wants a hooter.

Then you will be the baddest 7 knott boat in the village.

Finally the PT Does plain upwind and down treated properly. That is where some real speed is as the other boats all have terminal hull speeds.

Actaully, this is finally....slot rudders and foils.

No other old 14 foot boat will crossover to F14 as well as the PT.

I weigh about 220lbs so I am hoping that my weight will be an advangate at that time.

Have I shot myself in the foot then? I have already bought a hooter and main from whirlwind. They are the Hobie 14 models. I ended up goign with the square headed Dacon main.

The Buffalo fully battened jib would make a GREAT job for this boat also. Rake mast and buy a trap harness.

I already have the trap setup stuff.

I will not be racing the boat so I am not really all that concerend about that low level of detail. Is the loss of speed noticable in the seat of the pants? That is what my criteria for creating the sequence of the modifications that I am doing.

This boat REALLY wants a hooter.

That is why I bought one :)

Then you will be the baddest 7 knott boat in the village.

Are you implying that I will not go faster than 7 knots? I was hoping that I would hit double digits. Or do you mean that in 7knots of wind I am going to go pretty good :) I truly hope the latter

Finally the PT Does plain upwind and down treated properly. That is where some real speed is as the other boats all have terminal hull speeds.

If it planes, does that mean less of a worry of pitchpoling? The hulls look like airplane floats to me, only without the step.

What does this mean? I was looking at some pictures online and noticed that some of the newer boats are sporting much higher aspect ratio blades. I have spent time smoothing out the dagger board trunks as they were pretty slow looking. I plan on building new dagger boards as the ones I have are short and stubby and do not look fast at all. I was wondering though, if I build the blades asymetrical with the lift always going upwind, as opposed to the current symetrical... Will that give me extra lift to windward? If they work like an airlane wing, I do not see why it would not.

No other old 14 foot boat will crossover to F14 as well as the PT.

I just want to have fun, go fast and get wet. I am not really looking to race, I just want to have some fun and take my girls out for boat rides :) We will be taking it to the cottage and to my parents and to the local beach. I am not looking for a complicated rig...

You'll have to forgive my ignorance in this. I have only ever been on a catamaran on vacation in the Dominican. It was a hobie wave. I am hoping that my tiger will beat that boat in performance as I found that one fun, but lacking....

Thanks for the tips and comments,

Andrew

The foil rudders have foils like plane wings of the bottom of the rudders. This stop hobbie horseing and pitchpoliing.

Your rig will mean the mast is raked much more than a normal PT. This will drive it faster onto a plane up wind and it will be less inclined ti pitchpole downwind.

This boat will bbe muich more fun than the Wave.

As far as terminal speed I was timed with a steady 400 metres or 37Ks which is about 18 knots.

I know I could make one go faster now and your boats will have the power to go well into the 20s but will you be able to tune it and drive it???

What fun!
