When operating a fleet of mixed catamarans does it matter whether the course is triangular or windward returns (using VYC for results)? We are trying to keep our competition as fair as possible. It would be great to hear from someone who's in the know. I have had no reply from VYC....

Hi,

I believe that VYC favours W/R courses only. Apparently the "powers that be" say that T,-W/R,-T,-W/F provide "reaches" that are of no significance to the sailors ability.

I find it very hard to believe.

Hi Tackless,

when submitting results to get a F16 Yardstick I have tried to have this discussion with the handicapper. Realy I think that this area is totaly under resourced and they are just trying to imagine that boats and courses haven't changed.

In my opinion, it is not fair to handicap spinnaker and non spinnaker cats together on either type of course. Spinnaker cats are advantaged on windward and returns and non spinnaker cats are advantaged on triangles where the reaches are 60degrees or tighter.

If you have to race spinnaker and non spinnaker cats together, the reaches should equal the number of runs and be of similar length. This requires very long tight reaches, which the non spinnakers will love and the spinnakers should be happy as long as they get the same number of runs, this means 2 windward and returns for each tight reach triangle.

Regards Gary.
