Paul124ac
Righto, all the I's have been crossed and the T's dotted, the cat weekend is on at AWYC. Camping available, pizza night saturday $15 per family with desert, beer available, water available (100% ATM), what more could you want? Bit of breeze would be good, can't guarantee that. http://www.awyc.yachting.org.au/event.asp?ID=39686&format=popup See you there? A question, for the races, would we all like W/L's or a triangle with long reaching legs?, ie: same start/windward mark as rest of fleet but wing mark pushed out. We tend to sail Olympic, triangle, windward/return, triangle, which sorta sucks for cats.
Pointed Reply
Triangle, sausage, triangle -- with the wing mark waaay out so you get long fast reaches.
tonyquoll
Yep. Following picture illustrates how triangle courses SHOULD be set! Good luck at the training weekend, Albury-Wodonga Yacht Club, on the south side of Lake Hume's dam wall, 12th November from 9am.

Pointed Reply
I notice on the AWYC calender a "night race" for Saturday 11th. Anyone know anything about this ? Can the cats participate ? At Wagga we hang red and green "glow sticks" off the shrouds and cruise around.

Paul124ac
A hot topic that one Pointed. If it's a race held under RRS then at night it has to be Cat5n, no OTB boat can get that category. Conversely Lake Hume is enclosed, protected waters, and there will be Patrol Boats and also TS's with radios. I say if you wanna carry battery nav lights and some form of communication (RRS now says mobile phones comply) then go for it. It wont be a Marlay or a HCW, just a course of around 5nm and well away from known hazards, it'll probably be shorter knowing the LH winds. I've got 4 handheld UHF's, my TS has UHF, I don't mind acting as "Mother Ship". I've also got a fridge on board, just in case. We'll probably run it as a "record your own time" event similar to the Winter Series which was pretty successful- sail past a bouy in the bay, note the time or start a stopwatch, then when coming back past the bouy do the reverse. So long as you finish before a cut-off, or go round the turning mark before a cut-off, this means the rescue crews aren't stuck out there all night. We had a missing dinghy last time night-racing was conducted and it has scared a few, but I can't see why with enough back-up we can't do it? Pointed Reply
A reminder about the Cat day at Albury. I will have both my boats, Foamie Cat Rigged and Mark 2 Sloop rigged....so a "spare" boat for someone to try. I will also have a few bits to get other boats going as required. Forecast look good at this stage. Also glow sticks and torch ready for the night race.........should borrow the black sail from Pete !

Paul124ac
A quick follow-up. What a fantastic turnout and a fantastic weekend. Great to meet Rod and the effort he put in with rigging and set-up help was outstanding, a very knowlegeable and approachable fellow is Rodney and I appreciate the work mate, thank you. The racing was good, large mixed fleet with 16 cats ranging from W600 to P/T and even 2 ex-A Class champs who are on the wrong side of 60, one hadn't sailed a cat in over 25yrs but was still up the sharp end (in my "other" Hydra, how embarresment), the other got Micky's witch cracking and had the A worried. The wind didn't really show up, but the weather was good and the pizza/beer/bullshit flowed well sat. night, I am never drinking anything offered to me by Greg again. JD on his Taipan took out the honours overall, good to see him sail to his handicap :-). This will definately be on the calendar next year, thanks to everyone who came along and thanks to Pete for bringing the Yarrawonga crowd. A bit of blurb and some nice piccies, http://www.awyc.yachting.org.au/site/yachting/awyc/downloads/AWYC-Newsletter-2011-11.pdf , nice one of Rod flying a hull and Norm enjoying his new toy.
