gim
Hi, I was wondering when, where and by whom the Stingray was designed? All I can find on the net is that it was designed in the 1960s. Thanks.
Loose Change
G'day gim, It was the early sixties when the boat was designed at about the same time as the Tornado was making an appearance, At a distance you could easily mistake a Stingray for a Tornado. It was designed by four blokes; Geoff Clarke, James Rae, Dave Passenger and Bruce Hitchman from Sydney. In the beginning there were large fleets at both Manly and up the Central Coast near Gosford and from there they spread out. The plan sheets were huge, measuring 900mm X750mm by six very detailed sheets. The plans were professionally prepared by a consulting engineering firm in North Sydney, W.E. Bassett and Partners of Miller Street. I still have my original plan set, issued to me 24/11/1974 with the sail number #177 and signed by Geoff Clarke. Unfortunately I don't recall how much I paid for the plans when I bought them from the Stingray association.
gim
Many thanks to Loose Change for the information. According to Wikipedia, the Tornado was designed in 1967 (after the Mosquito in 1966). I was wondering whether the designs for both the Tornado and Mosquito might have been influenced by the Stingray design? The similarities are obvious.
