Dave
The 2012 Sydway Paper Tiger Catamaran Australian Championships will be held at Mannering Park Amateur Sailing Club, on Lake Macquarie, from 3rd to 8th January 2012. So far we have 38 entries from five states and one territory (ACT, NSW, Qld, SA, Tas & Vic), a truly national fleet! The event's major sponsor is Sydway Street Directories. Additional sponsorship has also been received from Redhead Sails, Swansea RSL Club, Blue Water Function Centre and Pretty Swish. The fleet includes the current national champion plus four former national champions who, between them, have won 17 of the 41 nationals held. International Championship winners are also represented, with the current International Champion plus five former international champions who, between them, have won 15 of the 27 International Championships that have been held. This year the Nationals have been reduced from a nine-day event to a six-day event in order to make it more accessible to everyone. There will still be a mix of long and short races, with the longer races (0.8nm legs) slightly shorter than what has been sailed in previous years (1.0nm legs). The short course (0.5nm legs) will be sailed over the popular "gate course", featuring tighter, exciting reaches, short runs and a gate at the bottom of the run on all three laps. This course has provided some exceptionally close racing over the years. The Paper Tiger Nationals always provide close and exciting racing in a good-sized fleet of competitive skippers. The rules of the class ensure boats are very similar in performance, yet there are enough freedoms to keep the interest of those who like to 'tinker'. The class is truly a national class, while also providing the opportunity to compete internationally, both individually and in a team representing your country. This is the 42nd Paper Tiger Nationals and is a selection event for the 2012 Paper Tiger Catamaran International Championships, to be held at McCrae Yacht Club, on Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, over Easter. The Internationals will see 20 New Zealand boats (NZ Team of ten boats plus another ten invitees) coming across to compete against the Australian Team of ten boats plus another 20 invitees. This will see a fleet of up to 50 of the best Paper Tigers competing for the highest achievement in the class, the International Champion.
