epoch
When sailing downwind in an F18 with the spinaker, what is the correct position of the main? Is it meant to be sheeted hard? Do you let the traveller out? cheers
Remo
Main is used as backstay.. Recommended let traveller out a little (15-30cm) and hard on main. You will notice in new F18 and F16 manuals, warranties are void if mast breaks whilst running the spi without main on hard!!

tornado
Traveller center. Give the main a little twist to ensure tell tails flow. Easing a little more main does not hurt but never dump main. Only ease traveller if you have over stood a lay line. In the early days of running kite, we all kept the main on hard because we were told if we ease it, we will snap the mast. Over time, F18 and Tornado (alloy stick) sailors began easing more sheet because tight = choaking main. You will be supprised how much you can ease it. BTW, the carbon Tornado stick is near on bullet proof. If you need a quick set to get out of a congested area you can forget the downhaul and mast rotation (boards stay down on a T) and just set the kite, get on the wire, leaving the skipper to trip the lines later on the downwind. Edge
Agreed, traveller ctr most of the time or down about 15 cm in light air to open the bottom a bit. Ease the main till the top telltails are flowing on the leech, but the tension is still firm, remember to look up, choking the leech will make the boat alot more pitchy fore and aft. If you drop the main sheet accidentally, drop the kite sheet or you might have yourself a bad day. If you are going really shy and have to have 2 wires, drop the traveller but keep the sheet tension on, you can go suprisingly high with the traveller well down the track.
