I just got pulled up by the highway patrol on the Snowy Mountains Highway and had my boat measured (not an F18) for width. Comment was there was a blitz on wide boats in NSW and that one was booked the previous day on that road. When he found my boat to be under legal max he tried everything else to find something wrong. Everything else was OK but he gave me a warning for not having extended side mirrors to see round the boat even though I could see through the back window and under and over the tramp. Hawky Posted January 9, 2013 Report Share Posted January 9, 2013 Just spoke to a nsw hwy policeofficer at macers this morning in balina about widths and he said there looking at width's of power boat,s catamarans, and caravans this xmas . I asked about over hang and was told there not really worried unless its was was over the 1mtr mark or looks like or cause,s a crash He said most power boats outboards hang over the most. darcy1945 Posted January 10, 2013 Report Share Posted January 10, 2013 Get the wrong bloke, on the wrong day, and you can be booked for overhang of the mast or rudders, I took the rudders off, moved the mast forward, and got away with a warning. korwich Posted January 10, 2013 Report Share Posted January 10, 2013 I think that you would be able to download the general overdimensional vehicle permit from RTA website and get away with it, with due signage maybe, overdimensional allows for up to 3.5metres wide I recall, not sure about overhang. I looked into it to move a overdimension site office using a car float years ago, ended up using a truck due to weight issues though. Worth a look though you just need to carry it in the glove box of the towing vehicle while you are overdimension, but is runs from year to year, no cost if you download it, it costs if you pickup the booklet from the rta though. nacramad Posted January 29, 2013 Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 Anything over 2.5 meters wide is considered to be a wide load,anything under is considered to be "in gauge"...........maximum allowable overhang is 3.5 metre from centre of axle,red flags etc don't cut it. yarra bay Posted February 1, 2013 Report Share Posted February 1, 2013 that was me with the F18 that got booked, for starters that police officer wouold book his own family. he pulled me over messured me at 2555mm thats 55mm over there was a few things he didnt even look for like no right hand side out side light there was no number plate light as well, my licence was stuck back together with sticky tape and he didnt random breath test me. this same officer had been posted bullet shells also found a pigs head on his door step korwich you really need to read that properly as anything over 2.5m wide can only be towed between sun up and dusk you need to flags and over size load signs and you have a speed limit of 80km Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

This is what plod was arguing, he was saying my mast was exceeding the 3.7m allowable limit from axle. You are allowed 5m so long as load does not exceed 2m wide, this does include the boat to allow rowing shells to be towed I guess. I see heaps of caravans with those roll out awnings, wonder if they are measuring them? My van is smack on 2.5m wide, any awning etc. would push it over width. nacramad Posted February 10, 2013 Report Share Posted February 10, 2013 In addition they allow up to 1.2 m rear projection yes ,look at the end of the day I'm not the one with the dramas my 5.8 nacra gets towed everywhere no dramas and I make sure my mast doesn't protrude any further than the rear of my hulls keeping me within the maximum overhang.i transport over dimension loads for a living and do realise that some of the local law enforcement have differing points of view,however there is some that specialise in over dimension load transport.
