This was from Mannering Park (beach start) up around Pulbah Island and back. Around 11 - 12 nautical miles (20-22kms). Breeze was NE around 8-12 I would guess. We started with a handicap start straight off the beach, and worked all the way up to the island. It is quite amazing how the landmass causes the breeze to twist and curve around and if you sail close to the shore how much of a lift you can gain from this effect. There were four cat rigged Mari's one square top Windy sloop, two Paper Tigers (one of which was Ian Markovitch so he started about an hour after everyone else!) and one Nacra 430. In the end three of the Mari's were within about 100 metres of each other, I was about five seconds in front of Darcy who in turn had recovered a ten minute later start. The Lake is such a great place to sail, always in relative safety (no risk of being blown out to sea for example) and the variation in the wind is very challenging. On our return, close to the final turning mark just to the south of the club for example the wind turns from NE to SE and strengthens (often seems to do this) making for a very fast last leg. Thanks Darcy for setting it up and setting the handicaps, they were very effective, pretty much all boats finished within ten minutes of each other. I saw Darcy writing something down at the clubhouse but there are no posted results. 20km over two hours woud be 10kph which would be around 4-5 knots. I guess that could be right, there were only a couple of fast bits, probably only a km or so, most of which we were trying to work away from the shore of the island. I live in hope of a nice southeasterly blow which would put you on a reach all the way there and back! But if the wing shifts it might be a long beat home... lakes are better in that respect! Two of my kids (probably about 20 and 22 then) came and were stunned by the bar prices at the start point - got very tired and emotional!! River is quite windy so you get a lot of different conditions. Kids got a bit bored though as it was running almost all the way. Someone else nearly lost a car and trailer when they didn't put the handbrake on properly and the rig started to slowly move down the steep ramp at Taree.
