captainiggy
I just rescued a Hydra 16 from terminal dis=use. All it really needs is a new tramp. Anyone have suggestions, pointers to a decent trampoline manufacturer, things to ask or watch out for?
Slowpoke
Captian, I would suggest you contact any of the sail makers in Brisbane. All they would need is the old one as a sample. Happy Sailing Gary
NixonJr
I would contact a sail maker and give them the measurements of the tramp you want made, Its better to make a new one off measurements then make a new one off an old one.
darcy1945
The motor trimmer next door makes very good diagonal cut tramps from $250, black only. Beside measurements he will need exact bolt rope size. ph 02 43591729 Darcy.
Fluid_Drive
Anyone know of a good trampoline repairer in Victoria?, and is it generally worth repairing a tramp or just buying a new complete one? cheers alex
Loose Change
Any sail maker or canvas worker should be able to repair your tramp to a good usable condition. The real problem is that you only repair those areas that see need attention so you can find yourself constantly pulling the tramp off and and on all the time while you are chasing repairs, so the best advice is to completely check and repair everything that needs doing. Depending on how much you are going to be spending on repairs it may pay you to have a new one made and be secure in the knowledge that you are not going to fall through it at an inopportune moment. As has been mentioned in another post, don't overcapatilise on this boat, use this one to decide if you like cats after coming from the Laser class and then maybe update. Fluid_Drive
Thanks a lot to you all for your brilliant advice, what ill do is repair the tramp and get the boat going. Get a race season in and go from there. Look for a hydra with sail number 927 and that will be me !!!
Fluid_Drive
Unfortunately the tramp is unserviceable and now a new one is going to have to be made, got an approximate quote for between 450-550, and a six week wait should come back after i have finished the hulls. Loose Change
$450-550 is too expensive, Shop around for a better price. I suspect you got this quote from a sail maker in which case I would try a canvas worker even if they can at times be a bit reluctant to take on marine related work. The material that tramps are made of is called chickopea (sp?) and I think another one is ferarri. When you get one made make sure that the mat is cut on the bias so the warp and the weft yarns run at 45 degrees to the center line as this will tension up better than at 90 degrees. Refer to Darcy's post at the top.
Fluid_Drive
Yeah i thought was on the higher end of the price range, Darcy would you be able to post a pic of the Tramp that bloke makes please. If he does do a good tramp will go with him. Just been bitten by a shonky fiberglassing bloke, was told he was good at marine fiberglassing work. Took my dagger boards and rudders to get done, they had crazing and some chips on the leading and trailing edges. Have had them back for a while thinking they were ok, decided to give them a light sanding. Well all the crazing was just painted over and the chips were filled with a filler, which just fell out. It's extremely disappointing to have paid quite a large some of money for something that i have to redo again. :( So if this bloke can make a good trampoline i'm willing to travel
madboutcats
I cant get your picture but I get my tramps fixed at saddlerys, they normally dont have zigzag so they do lots of straight at a very cheap price
Fluid_Drive
The tramp is unrepairable as the the outer fabric that holds the beads onto the tramp mesh has started to fray and tear in all the corners. :(
madboutcats
Edges are easier a saddlery would probably double some material over the edges and stitch it down an inch or so inside the good material probably cost $50 if its real fiddly
Fluid_Drive
Hmm ok will have a talk to the saddlery and see what they can do, um wheres a good place to get strong bungee cord in long lengths as the tramp will need a fair bit of it I know you can get from clark rubber and other similar outlets but wondering if there was an industrial strength version out there. cheers alex
darcy1945
Give me a call on (02)43591729, Tramps are well made, standard black mesh, diagonal cut, with stowage pocket. will need overall dimensions and bolt rope size. You could send a photo or your old tramp.
Emmessee
Post him the old tramp and he can throw it when done if it is trashed. I always think that you need a good trap on your boat. It makes sailing much more enjoyable.
Loose Change
wheres a good place to get strong bungee cord in long lengths as the tramp will need a fair bit of it cheers alex errr ....what's the bungee cord for? If you mean lacing cord, I always used starter cord, the kind that you have on recoil starters on small motors. It's ultra strong, holds a knot well and best of all for us impoverished sailors, it's not expensive.
Fluid_Drive
Heres a pic of what i mean, through the central iolets bungee cord is threaded, it maintains the taughtness of the tramp. Its a bit of an odd ball setup so whether i should modify to a more current design is another question.
Emmessee
Yeah, we don't do that anymore. You need a new tramp dude. Either get one made locally (recommended as the bloke can actually see your boat in the flash) or get Darcy's mate to do it with photo's and sending him the old tramp. This one could be recoverable, but for mine, I wouldn't bother. You will not know yourself with a nice single piece tramp. A new Nacra tramp or Maricat tramp is around 4-5 hundred from factory. Fluid_Drive
Yeah i thought was cactus, has a sit on it and head a lot of moanings and groanings from the tramp, if you have a careful look all the fabric is completely stuffed around the edges. The quote i got was about 450-550 for a brand newy and a six week wait. The only issue is the boat is in a thousand pieces at the mo, redoing the paintwork and fixing up all the rigging. At least all the other gear is good quality ronstan or harken bits and pieces. Have a look at the shed theres some pics of the boat in one piece before i took it apart cheers alex
