F18s in The Great Race

1st Brad Collett/Luke Macdonald (Fibrefoam)

2nd Slimey/Chris Homan (Creative Courts)

3rd Mal Gray/Matt Homan (Sunstate Hobie)

4th Shane Peterson/Jerome (Concept Systems)

5th Nick Green/Keegan (Mangrove Muncher)

Exciting start with 2kts of opposing current, 5kts of wind and a port-biased line. Slimey mounted the pin mark after playing pinball with the rest of us. Neville got away cleanly, chased by Mal/Matt. Nev hit top mark on the rounding and subsequently got sent back four minutes later for something else. NOT HAPPY NEV!!!

After setting the kite in a building and backing breeze, Sunstate Hobie took off to build a decent lead, followed by Magic Marine (Warren and Adrian). Slimey was close behind. Fibrefoam was deep in the pack way back. The first twenty miles of meandering through the channels required much double-trap shy-spinnaker reaching. Mangrove Muncher carried the kite shy whenever possible in the breeze which gradually worked from the south east into the east.

When the breeze finally freshened to its 12kts max, the leaders were swamped by the charge and went from comfortably in front, to fourth in the space of 500 metres. The game was on! From Russell Island to the finish, Fibrefoam leapt away but the next three battled on neck and neck to finish seconds apart.

At the presentation, Slimey told all the sailors on other boats that he overtook to stop lwatching and buy an F18!
