Dave
The 2007 Swire Shipping Paper Tiger Catamaran International Championships were sailed over Easter at New Plymouth Yacht Club, New Plymouth, New Zealand. The new International Champion is Bruce Rose from Tasmania, Australia. Bruce, a twice Australian Champion, had finished second a few times in previous Internationals, but this was his first win. He was sailing a borrowed boat, as he couldn't get his across to the mainland in time to get it into the container that left from Melbourne. Dave Godfrey, whose boat was already in the container, generously offered to lend his boat to Bruce. Dave then took on the role of Team Manager for the Australian Team. Runner up was Ben Deed of Victoria, Australia, who has won the event three times previously. Third place went to Glenn Syman from Wellington, New Zealand. The International Teams trophy was won by the New Zealand Team. Race Winners were Mark Wiggins (AUS), Ben Deed (AUS) (2 races), Bruce Rose (AUS) (3 races), Bob Preston (NZL), Glenn Syman (NZL). The series started off with heavy conditions, but this dropped away on the second day, with the rest sailed in light airs. Jamie Sutherland and the crew at New Plymouth Yacht Club did a great job running the series. Our thanks to the series sponsor, Swire Shipping, who transported the Australian boats to the event. Without their generous support, the event would not have been possible. A full list of the results can be seen on the New Plymouth YC web site at www.npyc.org.nz.
