bad dog
BULLETS CANCELLED 2012 Sadly the Committee of Palm Beach Sailing Club have been left with no option but to cancel the Beware the Bullets Regatta for 2012, due to onerous insurance requirements placed on it by the local authorities, which could not be met within the timeframe and budgets available. An all too familiar story - in spite of sailing clubs having a strong safety record. The Committee is working to resolve the issue for a 2013 Bullets, hopefully before the end of the season. We regret any inconvenience this may cause anybody, but you are always welcome to come and sail with us on that day's resumed regular competition. The Big Bloke
Curious - what are other small boat sailing clubs expected to have in public liability insurance cover? What onerous issues did you encounter with the authorities. Our Public Liability Insurance at Great Lakes went up this year from around $1500 it has been for the past 4 or 5 years to around $2200 from memory for this season. However we did have an increase in members based on our YA membership numbers which I was told by Masterman Insurance Brokers was the principal reason for the increase. It is a sad day when you jump through all the risk management hoops and you still get shafted. Tim Haffner Great Lakes Sailing Club
bad dog
Crikey - why was it even $1500 to start with? Are you covered for $10m or $20m? The Committee were told we had to have $20m cover just for the Bullets (plus a few other things), which had not been budgeted. We were budgeting to break even (trying to keep entry fees low to encourage all and sundry etc etc), but it would have put us $700 below water, which - when the 'other' issues were added - made the unpleasant decision to cancel necessary. The other issues were more logistical - made worse by the whole reserve around our parking area being halfway through a nice looking landscape upgrade. But half finished so only half useful.
