Saturday, October 26th saw the close of the Zhik F18 Americas Championship Regatta, hosted by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. After 5 days of tough competition, scoring a total of 41 points, Mike Easton and Tripp Burd were named the 2013 F18 Americas Champions with their Nacra Infusion!Following closely behind in second place with 45 points was Gunnar Larsen and Ferdinand van West, also with a Nacra Infusion. Larsen and van West traveled from the Netherlands to attend this inaugural event. Third place was secured by youth sailors Taylor Reiss and Matthew Whitehead with 66 points.Weather and wind cooperated for the entire week enabling race committee, led by PRO Fairlie Brinkley, to run 17 races before abandoning all racing after one race on the last day due to lack of sailable wind. Up to that point the RC has run 4 races per day in both Sarasota Bay and in the Gulf of Mexico. Winds varied throughout the week from as low as 8 knots to over 24 knots. Temperatures were in the 70′s and 80′s (fahrenheit) with only one morning of rain that cleared out before racing began.In addition to being named the 2013 F18 Americas winners, Easton and Burd were also named the 2013 US National F18 Champions.We were extremely excited to have such young talent sailing in the fleet this week.
