CleverNickname
I'm sailing a Nacra 4.5 and seem to be forever adjusting my rudders because the rope is slipping through the cleat (pivmatic system). Is this a common problem and how do I fix it? I hit a lot of jellyfish where I sail and this causes the rudders to slowly lift. Brad
Emmessee
Try new ropes as the current ones may be slipping or the cleats themselves may have had their day and need replacing. Neither is expensive. I usually would go the change of rope first. I will send you some picks once I have the kite up on my 4.5.
CleverNickname
Hi Matt, The ropes were replaced earlier this year, so maybe the cleats need attention. I might sharpen the leading edge so that I can slice through the jelly fish. I finally got the courage to trapeze while sailing single handed. What an awesome experience. My trapeze wires were not quite long enough, so once I lifted one hull out of the water I felt like I was standing vertically.
Emmessee
That's funny. You have to have them right so you are just as comfortable out on them as you would be sitting in. Nacra also make wings for the 4.5 if you are interested in them for social sailing.
REV YUKKA II
i'm not sure if sharpening the leading edge would be a great idea, you may find that you stuff up the patten of flow of water over them. not sure what sort of cleats you have put can you get a file onto them and sharpen the teeth. also do you have a single or double purchase on the rudders, a double is the way to go. xmatelot
hi, give briscats a ring (32714944)and talk to the guys, there is an alternative rudder downhaul system instead of pivmatics, that is better in jellyfish situations, but the pivmatic system is a safe kick up one. it maybe that you need new cleats only. pete
Emmessee
Don't change the leading edge of the rudders. Just fix the cleats. You should not need a 2:1 system but they are easier to get the rudders down if you are a Mr Puniverse.
rossco
You need new Pivamatics are about $35.00, from BCC. Trying to fix the old ones can be a pain depending on how successful you are at drilling the pop rivets out. I replaced the cleats then broke the casing 1st sail after..... CleverNickname
I was joking about sharpening the rudder to slice through the jellyfish.

CleverNickname
Can anyone post a photograph showing the 2:1 rudder system? Brad
zeflyguy
I do suggest the 2:1 as it helped with my ability to point higher. The rudders can be pulled on harder and there is no play compared to the piviot system. Try holding the bottom of the rudder blade and see how much movment you get and you'll see my point. However there is no safety for hitting the bottom so lift your rudders before lifting the centerboards.
xmatelot
hi,(again), the 2-1 system is not a very good option with pivmatics, difficult to implement!!!!.if you are having seemingly major problems, talk to the guys at BrisCats,(32714944) and check the other options. pete [This message has been edited by xmatelot (edited 13 December 2006).]
Emmessee
The 2:1 can be used with pivmatics, but you are right, they do not pop up easily. When I was a Mr Puniverse (13 yo) I did a type of 2:1 system and it worked and they did pop up. I pop rivited a saddle on the tiller arm just aft of the black pop up system. I tied my rope to there, it then threaded through a small pully that was on the original pull down rope as far back as I could get it with the rudder up, and it then came back through the existing cleat. It worked well and still allowed the pop up if required. Also, when sailing in jelly blubber country I had shockcord tightly tied around the tiller arm and I would slip this over the pivmatic pop up system so it wouldn't pop everytime I hit a big one. Then I would slide it off on the way back to the beach. I try to let the rudders up myself everytime so never a problem if I forget, but sometimes you can't be too careful in sailing. REV YUKKA II
Sorry don't even own a camera. the system that they come with as standard now is great you can pull the rudders down from anywhere on the tramp.
