Emmessee
Travemunde Woche 22-28 July 2006 Location: Travemunde, Lubeck Bay, Germany. Entries: 74 boats, 20 Nations Day 1 - 23 July 2006 In Brief: Shifty tricky conditions Breeze 3- 12 knots Bundock/Ashby finish 14,7 Bundock/Ashby 7th overall In Detail: The first day of the Tornado European Championships saw another unusually warm day of 30 degrees and a gradient land breeze blowing. The problem for the day was that the gradient breeze was fighting with the seebreeze causing massive wind pressure and angle differences. The first race started in a questionable six knots of breeze and the first 5 boats had there own personal breeze up the middle of the course. Bundock/Ashby were left out on the left hand side of the course up the first upwind and rounded the first mark with the tail enders in the high 60's. From then on Bundock/Ashby made massive gains on each leg of the corse to get back to 14th by the finish. Hagara/Steinacher (AUT) also made massive gains to move from 30th at the first mark to win the race. Race 2 started in light shifty conditions once again but this time a 40 degree left hand shift happened right on the starting line and the boats starting at the port end tacked and reached to the first mark. Unfortunately the race officer did not re adjust the course and it made it a follow the leader course reaching from one mark to the other. Bundock/Ashby elected to go right and started at the top end of the line and were disadvantaged by the shift at the start. Lucky for Bundock/Ashby that the shift was so big that most of the fleet overstood the first mark. Bundock/Ashby rounded the first mark 20th and sailed very well to come back to 7th. Ashby said "it was a frustrating day as we sailed very well and made big gains throughout the day" Bundock said "I am pleased considering how unpredictable the day was and we finished the day with two ok results and are still in contention of the leaders. It was a hard day for some of the main contenders".
