PT Nationals / Henley Beach

A quick unofficial report from the Nationals so far.

28 skippers are attending, with a couple of pretty new boats, and a lot of new or near new sails.

First day of racing was light conditions (5knots). The oldies led the way with Ian Markovitch and Garry Williams showing the rest of the fleet how it's done. The top ten is being dominated by redhead sails.

The wind was a bit stronger for the next 2 races, in the 3rd heat Bryan Anderson led the way, from the usual suspects in the rest of the top ten. My report ends there as i left the next heat to get to a party..

Looks like if it's light Ian will be hard to top, if the wind comes up Greg Williams and Bryan seem to have the pace.

Will try to keep updates as things go along.

Hope everyone had a great new years!

Cheers.

A bit of an update.. I've been a bit closer to the leaders, can actually read the sail numbers as they cross the line now.

The wind has been around the 20knot mark for the last 3 races, and Greg has taken the last two bullets so things have turned basically into a 2 horse race between Greg and Bryan.

Back-to-back races tomorrow with moderate winds forecast, then a morning race to finish things off on Wednesday.

There has been a bit of damage with the heavy conditions, a few masts looking like bananas and some rudders that don't want to stay connected have caused some dramas. Plenty of skippers taking the time to have a swim also.

Overall the regatta seems to be going well!

Cheers. Tom.

Hi,

Just picked this off the grapevine. Hope the formatting makes some kind of sense:

  • 2 weeks later...

The regatta was held in winds that were either 5 knots, or 15-20 knots..

When the wind was light, there was a lot of weed in the water, and it seemed that handling the removal of weed contributed to speed as much as any other factor.

You can see by the results that the ability of Bryan and Greg to perform well in both light and windy conditions was the difference that put them ahead of the pack.

One standout performance came from Ron Wiggins who had a rudder fall off on the first leg of heat 6. He managed to retrieve the pin, fit the rudder back onto the pintles, and get going again but was right near the back of the fleet.. By the end of the race he had worked his way to 3rd!

From my perspective, the top boats were all quite evenly matched in speed. See my other thread on how it is amazing that the boats are set up quite differently, but end up all the same pace.

I haven't sailed at this level for a few years, and have been developing a new sail here in SA. I can see why the fast boats/skippers are so hard to beat as you get instant feedback on how your boat is performing and are able to make continual improvements. I used to have a weakness in the windier conditions so focussed on that with the new sail. Now i had no problem sailing inside the top 10 in the windy stuff, but was deep in the 20's in the light airs..

You only get so many chances to make adjustments and see the effects! The top guys have the knowledge and ability to get their boats to perform at close to optimum performance at all times.

Congratulations to the skippers that made up the top 10. It's certainly not an easy feat in this class. Good luck to the boys when they come up against the Kiwi's..

I'll leave it up to some of the eastern state skippers to add more details, i thought it was an exciting regatta. The outcome was in doubt right up to the last heat. Bryan wasn't shy to take some risks and managed to pull off a port start and get clear air.

A deserving winner!

Thanks from the SAPTCA to all skippers that attended, it was great to catch up with old friends. I hope everyone enjoyed their time in SA.
