Performance info on 4.0 Maricat vs 4.3

There is a significant difference between the 4.0 and 4.3.

The 4.0 are shorter, narrower with smaller mast. They have a significantly shorter bow which makes them less bouyant and prone to nose dive if pushed hard. Many tend to have the spade beach rudders which makes then harder to steer. Some of the ex rental boats also don't have a traveller. A 65 kg sailor can easily handle a 4.3, cat rigged and right it capsized. By "foam" I assume you mean Styrofoam. That will only help bouyancy if you hole the boat.

The 4.3 is significantly faster as can be seen by the yardstick of 94 for a 4.3 and 111 for a 4.0. Also if you want to race there are almost no 4.0s racing. A well sailed 4.3 will keep up (and beat) any other 14ft cat.

But if you just want to learn and sail about then a 4.0 at the right price would be perfect.

whereabouts are you, if anywhere near the Central Coast drop in on Mannering Park on a Saturday. We have one 4.0, several 4.3's and a few windy's.

irrespective of handicap it's far better to be sailing in company with similar boats. yesterday our Mari fleet had a selection of different ages and skipper abilities, there's always someone to sail against, rather than just sitting there hoping the handicap will give a win.

Inland sailor, the 4m Mari is as KO said, is 1' shorter, about 6" narrower, about 18" shorter mast, shorter boom and significant less sail area, with the intro of the Mk 2 rear beams they gained a traveller and deep rudders to then became the 4m sport, the mk1 4m had no traveller and is mostly seen in hire fleets. To put a 4.3 rig on a 4m is simple but that boat then must have a reduction in y/stick (10 min would be about right) to 101min, if the 4m you are sailing against has a 4.3 rig you are being got at. Darcy,

Thanks for that info on the 4.0 Mari. I've not noticed that its narrower than the 4.3. and it definitely has the 4.3 rig. Mast, mainsail, boom, jib and has the deeper rudders and traveler set up [so could be a 4.0 Sport.]

This boat is as quick as 4.3s and is always in the mix with them, but I might add, its lake sailing with the reasonably gentle chop that goes with that.

As far as handicap goes, its generally sailed SS on 100, but that still means it has 13 mins in the bank, and may now be wrong anyway!

PS Were there many 4.0 Sports built?
