elscotto
Hi everyone, I have just gotten hold of what looks like a maricat for free , which needs a bit of work :(, but I am looking forward to fixing up and sailing her . Anyway, it looks like a maricat but on the top of the hull near the front beam, raised in the fibreglass is "seamach boats". Now after a bit of research (NSW maricat assoc) it looked like they were origionally built by sea mac. So is this a really old maricat or something else? Also, just to throw a spanner in the works the sail has a buffalo head and seems to be made by "HIRE"???
darcy1945
It sounds like a Mari, disregard the sail,
elscotto
Thanks darcy. How old do you think it may be? Also is it you that has spar bits and pieces for maris?
darcy1945
The difference; mk1 has a separate "I" beam attached to the rear beam for the traveller, the mk 2 has the traveller track as part of the extrusion in the rear beam, and the boom (which is much stronger). Early mk1s have cast alloy chainplate attachment for the side stays, later mk1s and all current boats have flat stainless. The most important part of the Mari is the dolphin striker and its attachment straps (check carefully, if in doubt replace)
elscotto
Hmm, the rear beam looks the same as the front beam (has the channel that you could put the tramp through facing the back) but without the arc to it. it looks like the main sheet just attaches to a saddle bolted to the centre of the rear beam. The boom is just a hollow aluminium tube. The side stay attachments have a flat stainless bit going down the underside of the lip on the hull. I suppose that is what you mean. the dolphin striker looks to have been worn down by the wire that goes through it. Also the mast holder bit is broken where the pin sits. I was going to fill that with epoxy with a stainless cup for the mast pin to sit in, would that work? just as a side, I am 42 now and have not been sailing since we had a 14' Hobie when I was a teenager so I will probably be harrassing you lot whilst I do this thing up. I will try and upload some photos as I go. Cheers
darcy1945
Measure it, with no traveller it sounds like a 4.0 rather than a 4.3 (the 4.0 boats were mostly hire boats) and it would be 30 or so years old, certainly a mk1, they are slightly narrower as well. The flat stainless should be top and bottom of the hull deck join with 4 screws (2 of them through the saddle which the chainplate attaches to). The mast step is a hard repair, your epoxy and stainless cup may work but I don't think so, all of the rig load ( your weight, mainsheet tension and power in the sail) is transferred through the mast step and supported by the dolphin striker. elscotto
I will measure when I get home, I think you may be right though. It looks about 30 years old. Your explanation of the chainplate thing is spot on to what I have. The bit I was refering to is a little flat brace on the hull for the bit you were refering to. Thanks very much for your help Darcy.
elscotto
Went home for lunch, and yep, she is a 4.0. That actually clears up a few things for me with regards to the rigging/lack of rigging as it probably was a hire cat. would the 4.3 mast, boom, sails ect. work out ok for this boat? darcy1945
Yes, use the complete 4.3 rig (easier to find). The stays, (only the sidestays if you rake the mast), will need to be shortened.
elscotto
thanks again darcy.
Pointed Reply
Interesting that the Mari 4.0 exhogger, from Wodonga, had a Mk 2 back beam...cut down to size.
darcy1945
The Mari 4.0 Sports is mk2 (exhogger is most likely 1 of this model)
Pointed Reply
Yes a couple of saddles indicating where the shock cord for the trap may have been.
