knobblyoldjimbo
And the answer is NOT a catsuit. I've just acquired a "Darcy Special" and joined MPYC. What would I need to wear at this time of year - I have a pfd and reef shoes but does one use a wetsuit of some sort. I've seen the lighter spring suits and might even find one that fits my aged frame! Thanks James
Leapin Leroy
Jim, If you were lucky enough to live in S.E.Q. it would be a pair of springsuit shorts, a rashy, PFD & Trap harness 9 months of the year... But since you don't... the spring suit is the way to go. Shop around tho, the price variation is huge. Some will custom make over the net... I got (2), a long leg (singlet top) and a short leg (singlet top) spring suits custom made as a package deal for about $300.00 from a place called "Rubber Jungle" on the Gold Coast. (And for the guys that know me... no i don't wear them out at night, they clash with my assless leather chaps.) Hope this helps. knobblyoldjimbo
thanks LeRoy - it does. I found a shorty suit (2mm I think) for $80 here in Sydney so I might invest - I have a rash top (a QLD Maroon one acquired from the QLD Careel fleet at the last Nationals!) so won't look too stupid!! Leapin Leroy
Jimbo, You may still need something to keep the chest warm... Nothing worse than shivering your way around the course. I found that my old army (cadet) pure wool jumper is perfect for the cooler/windier days. (It is a bit of a stretch over my expanding "muffin top"... if you watch 'Kath & Kim', you'll get that one ). Try to get one from an army disposals, preferably 2nd hand as it will have already been washed and therefore shrunk! Rinse only in cold water... Mine's over 30 y.o. and still going strong! Put it over the top of your PFD as this will help trap a layer of air warmed by your body... you'd be surprised at the difference that this can make! You can soak it and it's still neutral bouyancy in the water, adds an edge on those windy up-wind legs, and last but not least, will still keep you warm even when wet. Again, hope this helps... xmatelot
HI James, As I get older, I am sure that the second most important things to keep warm are the kidneys. A good wet suit is a must. pete

xmatelot
Hey DooD, I reckon that the guys at Mannering would have the best advice pete [This message has been edited by xmatelot (edited 17 October 2007).]
lachy pudney
I would suggest getting a ronstan skiff suit, either long or short sleeved depending on how cold you get. they are really quite warm, they stretch in the right places for sailing and they last especially in the knees (I am up to my 4th yeart on my wetty) and also they are very reasonably priced
darcy1945
James, wear an old pair of shorts over your new wetsuit to avoid tearing the seat out. My wetsuit is always in the car but seldom required as in light weather you wont get wet and when it blows you are working to hard (hikeing) on a cat rig to get cold. humungus2
Hey Jim. Are you the pom on the Maricat. If so, sailing at Mannering park for you would only need shorts, T shirt and a hit flask full of port mixed with scotch. You sailed very well by the way.
