Shane
Hi I am starting to think my hobie 14 is to slow and am thinking about getting a nacra 5.2 Just a question about these dagger boards - what happens if they hit the gound - do the kick back at all ? break,? tear the hull out? Thanks
Groover
Hi Shane, they don't kick back at all. Depending on the situation you will hear/feel them touch ground and take action before there is a problem. But if you say hit a sand bar unexpectedly at speed you will come to a quick stop. The boats are strong so you would have to really hit a sharp incline to possibly do damage.
darcy1945
Shane, you could possibly do expensive damage to dagger boards and hulls if you hit something at speed, the price for performance!
richard cullum
Hi Shane, Jumping from a Hobie 14 to a 5.2 is almost going sideways as both are getting very long in the tooth . A very good choice if you were wishing to sail solo is a Nacra 4.5 with the new mylar rig. Well sailed this boat will match a Hobie 16 or a mid fleet Nacra16sq. Check out the race times in the mixed fleet results at the Gold Coast cat week, the results speak for themselves. Benefits of the 4.5 are many, light weight for easy righting after capsize, no dagger boards, can carry two people easily, plus it is still a current boat with an expanding racing fleet. Shane
cool - thanks for all the advice.
darcy1945
Taipan 4.9 is also worth a look, good performance cat rig solo, or 2 up super sloop for a real rush, then fit a kite and go ballistic. Nacra 430 in F14 spec, wet wild and a challenge.
Shane
thanks Darcy ... kinda depends on what is locally available ... but i will keep those in mind :-)
catflaps
Nacra 14 sq, although getting on in age are still very rewarding when you get it right. Not as quick as the 16s and the 4.5. Your body weight should also be considered when looking at how much sail is being carried. The 14sq is quick and easy to rig and good examples can be found for around $2k. Great way to get into sailing Nacras.

nacrabat
At 90kg you'd be better looking at a 16sq or 4.5.
MOZZY
At 90 KG get a 16sq - fast, stable and recent sail upgrades with lots of others still out there.
