MelbCatSailor
Hi guys, The last time i took the boat out it had quite a few litres of water in both hulls, so i'd like to perform a leak down test to try to fix this. Can someone please provide some instructions on going about this - what PSI is safe when using a compressor, and what to do when I do find the leaking bits Many thanks, Michael
darcy1945
Michael, Blow in the bung hole as if blowing up a balloon, 6/8 deep breaths is usually enough even on a h18 or 5.8, another body is required to listen for leaks. This system has never failed for me and wont damage the boat.
MelbCatSailor
thanks for the reply dary, i'll give that a go, or i'll blow up a balloon and attach it to the bung hole that way. How do you fix the leaks once you find them?
darcy1945
"O" rings on hatch covers, bung fittings/ washers. beam bolts, centreboard cases, hull bottom, transom damage around pintles, etc, ph 0243591729 when you find the leak to discuss repair options
tonyquoll
if it's a crack, drill 2mm hole ach end, use a hacksaw blade to clean it out. Then mix up putty of filler in polyster resin, spatula that into the cracks. Need to have boat upside down so it goes in, not falls out. For bolt holes, eg rudder pintle bolts, use Sikaflex
MelbCatSailor
Thanks so much for the replies guys. I've decided to put it off for a few weeks, as i've got lots of other projects on the go at the moment (fixing a motorbike and building a cat run) I'll give it a go in a few weeks when i've got a spare weekend Thank you darcy for offering to help - i'll let you know what I find. Steelnerve
I find an air mattress inflater worked a treat & cheap to buy, volume but no more pressure than your lungs. seal it up over inspection hole then go around with a spray bottle of water/detergent mix and find where it blows bubbles. In saying that I must do it to my Taipan some day, it worked a treat on my Cobra. Found small holes in the most obscure places.
