bad dog
My Gill trap harness has lost its little red plastic retainer clip thingy, and surprise surprise, it's not available as spare part on its own, you have to pay $35 for a whole new quick-release hook etc, just to get a 3c plastic bit. This is plainly crap and I'm not doing it. Does anybody have any leads on getting these tiny but amazingly useful retainers?
tornado
Just run without. It is the first thing most sailors get rid of when they buy a harness. Or if you realy want one, ask someone who just bought a Gill Harness if you can have theirs.
bad dog
You're no fun - it's one of the reasons I bought the Gill. It does a good job keeping me hooked up when coming in and out in flukey winds (oh I must be talking about Pittwater!). I find it really inconvenient to push out in a gust only to land flat back in the water - and the boat falls over. I could raise the height of the eye, but then it's hard to get flat out on the wire. Any Gill users not want their little red plastic bits?

madboutcats
Originally posted by bad dog: I could raise the height of the eye, but then it's hard to get flat out on the wire. bad dog it sounds like you have your shockcord pulling your trap dogbones down. If you change your trap setup to have a parell bead on one end with a rope that runs through the end of your trapwire under the handle and terminates at your dogbone, you can attach your shockcord below the parell bead and the shockcord will always pull your dogbone on not off. I don't like the retainers at all and have removed them from our Magic marines.
bad dog
Madbout cats - I don't have dogbones, I have the Ronstan teardrop type. It does have the option of being pulled up when off-load, but can still slip off when you're 'neither in nor out' - hovering in that thigh-trembling mode waiting for the next little shifty gust. Catboy - you can't make a statement like that and not say why! So - why not? I'll preempt the expected reply with a comment that I have never had it jam on - it always slips off with a swipe of my hand when I swoop in to tack. If I capsize (lees often these days. Now watch me do it on Saturday!) it does not stay hooked up at all. Or are there other reasons for disliking them?
Leon
bad dog, Suggest you not using one.Remove it. If capsize the clip is hard to get the trap ting off while being draged in water. There for you could drag under boat and drown.
bad dog
I appreciate your concern Leon, thanks. However, I'm not worried, as the retainer cannot resist even a slight tug - it just resists the weight of the ring. If I do a good graceful tack, I swing in, and as I move under the boom, it releases without being touched, and I hook up on the other side while pulling on the main with the other hand. (If only all tacks went as smooth as that) On the other hand, on the odd occasion when I lose it and we all end up swimming, two things happen - as I fall over the back of the now horizontal main, the retainer lets the ring off the hook, and - the boat cannot turtle, it's physically impossible. It just stay on its side, has done for 40 mins once (remember the thread a couple of years ago about losing your boat?) So I can't get dragged under.
