madboutcats Posted January 14, 2010 Report Share Posted January 14, 2010 G'day here’s some info on our Earthmovers distance race to be held in Kingston SE South Australia by the Lacepede Bay Sailing Club April 17th 2010. The 2009 race was competed by F18 Infusion, Nacra 5.8’s, A Classes, 5.7 Taipans, 4.9 Taipans, F16’s, Stingray's big and little rigs, Mozzie, Cobra's with spinnakers, and Arrow's Cost for the race is $30. We will provide a great inexpensive tea with generous serves at the club on Saturday night, the canteen will be open for lunches and snacks. The bar will be open with good prices $3.00 for light, $3.50 for heavy beer in cans and there is no BYO alcohol. Sailing will start as soon as we have enough wind not before 10.30am Saturday 17th this is a change from previous years but will ensure we complete as much distance as possible, the start time will be firmed up a couple of days before the regatta when we expect a fairly accurate weather forecast. April is our safest time of year for wind and we would expect somewhere between 10 and 20 knots on the day The course as the crow flies will be 5km SW from the club house to the Pinks beach drain, 10km or 13km N depending on the wind then 5 or 8km SE back to the clubhouse through the finish line on each lap to ensure we have a result. The faster cats with fitter crew hopefully will complete three laps giving them more than 70 km of racing for the afternoon. Competitors can choose to sail as many laps as they want then drop out as there will be handicap prizes for 1, 2 and 3 laps. 2009’s race was a 10km spinnaker run on flat water from South to North in about 15 knots. If Saturdays race is blown out we will compete the race on Sunday subject to weather. If the weather is too strong juniors will not be able to compete but will be supervised at the club by non sailing adults, there is no surf, big waves or rocks as the course is protected by the Margaret Brock Reef about 10km out, the only obstacles are the jetty and rock wall at the boat ramp, any competitor having trouble can pull up on the sandy beach and await pickup. We drive onto the sandy beach at the club to rig our boats, if you need a tow on and off the beach ask any club member and they’ll help you out. There are big tractor tubes; cricket sets etc to keep the kids and young at heart happy. More information on facilities Competitors are welcome to sleep in our clubrooms on the floor or camp next to our club rooms for the night at no cost and use the club showers, toilets etc. Don't plan on getting to sleep early though. This is not a proper camping ground so we can’t make too much noise late at night. We will mow a section of grass just south of the clubhouse suitable to pitch a tent on, in amongst some bushes that's far enough from the club to get some sleep. Kingston Caravan Park 87672050 is very neat and has some en-suite cabins Lacepede Bay Motel 87672444 is on the foreshore near the jetty and is highly recommended. Lobster Motor Inn 87672322 is near the Big Lobster on the highway and is well maintained. Crown Inn Hotel 87672005 Clean pub accommodation Royal Mail Hotel 87672002 Clean pub accommodation Mobil 190 roadhouse 87672419 has cheap rooms on the highway (bit rundown) Ray White Real Estate 87672200 manage bookings for beach house rentals and are easy to deal with, there will be little demand for beach house rental on this weekend except from sailors. Our clubhouse is 285km from the tollgate on Glen Osmond Rd it will take about 3 hours drive, straight down the freeway, turn right after Tailem Bend, and straight down to Kingston SE via the Coorong. Once in the town take a photo of the Big Lobster then turn right just after you cross the bridge and you will be in the main street, go to the roundabout turn right, go to the end of the road your now on the foreshore next to the Lacepede Bay Motor Inn. Turn left about 4km down you'll find the clubhouse, the only building on the foreshore. Were 5 1/2 hours drive from the tunnel in Melbourne and you can take a photo of the Big Koala on the way. Were a small club but we'll go out of our way to make you welcome. madboutcats Posted February 22, 2010 Author Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 G’day here’s some more good news about our Earthmovers weekend, Rivoli Bay sailing club are a sister club with us and if you’ve sailed the Earthmovers regatta previously you’ve sailed against them. Rivoli Bay sailing club is situated 1 hour’s drive south of Kingston SE South Australia at Southend on the Southern end of Rivoli Bay from Beachport, they’re hosting a race day on Sunday the 18th of April to complement our Earthmovers regatta on the 17th and make it a full sailing weekend. I highly recommend this club as they’re great fun as a social group, sail all day in a protected bay that’s pretty as a picture, they’ve mostly switched from monos to cats and now sail Taipan 4.9’s, Hobie 18, Arrows and Cobra’s with spin. They’re travellers and support any club that supports them so if you’re planning to come to the Earthmovers Regatta here at Kingston SE and want another day of racing let me know and I’ll advise the Rivoli guys. If there’s enough support for another distance race and the weather suits they’re prepared to run 13km as the crow flies across Rivoli Bay from Southend to Beachport or in the opposite direction depending on the wind which would be great fun, this would happen early enough in the day for competitors to get home before it’s too late on Sunday night. I’ll be competing of course so we’ll have a bit of a convoy leaving Kingston SE on Sunday morning probably around 9am. I’d really encourage you to support this club, if they get enough support they’ll make it an annual event so let me know if you’d prefer normal buoy racing on the Sunday, no racing or a bit of a distance race. We’ll be able to cover the logistics of getting skippers back to their cars and if you’re a bit nervy about the distance stick close to the shore as it’s a sandy surf beach that you can be picked up from if you have any difficulty.
