boat wanted

Hi

I was looking to buy a 14 or 16 foot catamaran. Maybe a Hobie or a maricat but not real fussy as I am just learning to sail.

I live on the Sunshine Coast in Qld - could travel 2-3 hours without an issue.

Thanks

Hi Shane

14 foot catamarans are a perfect introduction into cat sailing and will give you the skills and confidance to progress to a two man cat in the future

Hobie 14 Turbo is THE model for 14 foot cats and is readily available at a reasonable price AND will perform well still!!!

choose well and sail hard

Cant understand why people still buy Hobie 14's??!! With the range out there today you dont have to resort to crap..

Back in the seventies maybe.. Maricat, windrush, nacra, etc etc the list goes on for good cats to learn on.

Dont expect to be able to take a friend with you on the hobie 14, but a maricat or windrush is a lot more bouyant.

The only reason there is a market for 14's is because of buyers who have never sailed before.

Think about it a little more before you decide on anything.. skip the novice bad first decision and jump straight into something you can keep for a while and enjoy from beginner to expert.

A very good 14ft cat to learn on is the Arrow, they have just voted in a new modern looking big head main sail which means you will get the old shape sails in good condition quite cheap. They have a swing down centreboard so that you can point to windward, if it is too windy or shallow you can leave the board up and it has a trapeze wire so that you can learn to trapeze if you want to. It is the fastest 14 ft cat you can trapeze on and there are lots racing around Australia

Paper tiger is also a good option it has no trapeze but still a great boat.. they have centreboards and sail much better than any of the surf cats also if you end up in the drink which will happen there much easyer to right on your own... once you've had one for half a season you will wish you purchased something decent. hobie 14 windrush maricats all have way to little boyancy... try flying a hull with a heavy bloke or two small the windward hull just sinks and slows the boat right down hobie 16 also suffers from the same problem.. poor design and getting to long in the tooth.

I recommend the 14SQ, they are a great little machine.

Simple, easy to sail, bastard to tack, but once you learn how to do it, they are great.

Bullet proof (well, almost) cheap and go great.

In my opinion, get the one YOU want, that way you'll have no regrets, and if you change your mind (like i do) then sell it and buy another..

I've done this over the last 3 years, different boat every year and i'm learning more every year.

This year is the year of the A class at Tinaroo....

Shane, you should have a look at the Windrush, they are a good tough boat, cheap parts, and plenty of 2nd hand bits. (Depends on sail No, price and condition) $2000 will not buy a competitive Arrow or Paper Tiger, these boats are the quickest S/sloop and Cat rigged 14s only because they are built so light, with light and involved rigging, they are easily damaged and require a fair bit of maintenance, not ideal for a first cat or heavy skippers (Under 75 kg ideal) When you find something you are interested in get back to the forum and ask advice before buying.

i have some leads on some really cheap 14 foot maricat, 14 ft hobie and a 16 ft hobie also. The 16 foot hobie looks great in the pictures. I have read that it can be hard to right a capsized hobie 16 by myself but like the sound of it as it wouldn't be uncommon for me to have a passenger (will mostly be joy riding). It really is quite confusing - but i will have fun with what ever i get :-)

Shane, I have owned both a 14 and 16 foot hobie and now own a Windrush 14. If you are new to sailing don't buy a Hobie 16. They are sailed very differently to other cats. My son and I sailed two seasons on ours and swam more than sailed. Yes I could wright the boat at 86kg on my own - but I can take two kids or an adult joy riding on my Windrush 14 and feel much safer than either the hobie 14 or 16. All the above advice is from experienced sailors who have been there and done it before. Good luck.

I have a 14' Caper Cat, I'm on the Gold Coast. Easy to Sail Is in good condition and ready to sail. It has a Mainsail and a Jib. The Jib furls in and out with just the pull of a rope making it easy to powerdown and pack up. Adjustable trapeze wire, Deep Water Retractable Rudders for accurate steering, 1:4 ratio ratcheting main blocks, Tiller extension so you can steer while out on the trapeze, Mast Float to help prevent the boat from completely capsizing, Outboard bracket so you can easily fit a 2hp outboard or Electric motor, and even has storage room in the hulls(we have camped on Straddie a few times (Food, tent, etc in the waterproof compartments).

This Capercat named "cos i can", is on a registered trailer with 13 inch wheels, and a winch for getting the boat back onto the trailer (new axel and fittings). It can be sailed solo or with a partner in anything from 5 - 25 knots of wind.

Its the same make of boat Jesse Martin sailed from Cairns to the Cape in. I'm asking $1350. Can send pictures etc. Cheers Ian
