Video or Still?

Olympus do a waterproof/shockproof still (i think most other brands do aswell now)

For Video: Search "Helmet Camera" on ebay and there are HEAPS of fully independant bullet cameras that record straight to SD card... Image is definately not film quality but it is reasonable (there is a link to a demo). They say it is waterproof to 3 metres? $200-250

I'm not sure if this was what you had in mind... but it might be a start!

  • 2 years later...

Recently got an Oregon Scientific ATC3K, waterproof video 640x480 pixels, SD card, $200.

But where to mount it? Wear a helmet with it on top? On a rod to put it behind the boat?

I like the idea of someone on start boat filming, a few boats on the water filming, and editing it together for YouTube race reports; show the world what cat sailing is about!

Will be trying for footage of Paper Tiger Internationals this Easter.

I've had the Oregon 4 years, you can lower the quality of the video and go out to about 5 hours or 40 mins of good quality. I mount mine on my spin pole now but when I had the 5.8 I used 20mm aluminium tube that went from the top of the dolphin striker to about 600mm in front of the jib bridle where it bent up about 300mm. I cut out the end of the tube to fit around the striker then tied the other end at the jib. I posted a vid on you tube

"Nacra 5.8 catamaran in waves"

you can see how it works if your interested but don't laugh too much at the standard of sailing
